The Palace Park at Gatchina is one of the more atmospheric imperial parks around Petersburg — architects and landscape designers laid out artificial landscapes over the natural coniferous forest, bringing European landscape-architecture elements into the harsh northern natural context. The result is a specific and less-visited alternative to the more famous Peterhof and Tsarskoye Selo parks: quieter, wilder, with fewer set-piece fountains and more genuine landscape work. The Priory Palace and the water features make natural walking anchor points. Museum has been running since 1918. Combine with the palace interior visit for a full day.
