About
A guided tour at the Museum of Christian Culture on the art of the 14th-16th centuries — the passage from Byzantine icon-making to Italian Renaissance painting. The route runs through altarpieces, religious paintings, and works by Raphael and Sandro Botticelli in the museum's collection. The tour is aimed at general audiences and focuses on the specific visual and theological shifts of the Renaissance: the move from hieratic frontal composition to naturalistic space, the introduction of contemporary portrait detail into sacred subjects, and the development of the Renaissance's characteristic vocabulary of gesture. In Russian; the paintings do a substantial part of the work.
