Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace — State Halls tour
About
A guided tour of the state halls of the Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace at 41 Nevsky Prospekt, on the corner of the Fontanka. The palace was completed in 1848 by Andrei Stackenschneider — one of the leading architects of Nicholas I's reign — in the Neo-Baroque manner and is one of the clearest surviving examples of that style on the main avenue of central Petersburg. Contemporaries described it as 'a majestic palazzo' and 'perfect in its kind'. Built for the Belosselsky-Belozersky princes as a private aristocratic residence, the palace's state rooms — the Mirror Hall, the Oak Hall — retain their original decorative programme. The tour covers the architectural history, the successive owners (the palace passed to the Grand Ducal Sergei Alexandrovich in 1884), and the specific decorative choices of each phase.
