A guided tour of the Vladimir Palace on the Palace Embankment — a late-19th-century imperial residence built for Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, son of Emperor Alexander II. The palace is one of the most complete surviving examples of late-imperial neo-styling in Petersburg — the interiors were designed in a sequence of period rooms (Byzantine, Gothic, Louis XVI) that were fashionable in the 1870s and 1880s.
Unusually for a Petersburg palace, the original furniture and decorative programme survives largely intact. After 1917 the palace became the House of Scientists — a Soviet academic institution — which is why the interiors were preserved. Visits are guided-only.
