A day trip to Kronstadt — the naval fortress town on Kotlin Island in the Gulf of Finland, historically the base of the Russian Baltic Fleet and closed to civilian visitors until 1996. The route runs the 25-km Kronstadt Dam (a Soviet-era engineering project completed in 2011) across the Gulf, so the journey itself is part of the experience. The tour covers the Naval Cathedral (a large Byzantine-Revival building completed in 1913, one of the more striking Russian religious buildings of the 20th century), preserved ships and dock installations, and the Gulf frontage. Kotlin Island has three centuries of continuous naval history compressed into a walkable area. Full day, weather-dependent — Kronstadt is exposed to Gulf wind and rain.
