The Leningrad Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Russia, founded in 1865 by the Dutch (Prussian-national) Julius Gebhardt and his wife Sofia. It sits in Alexander Park on the Petrogradskaya Side and retains its late-19th-century layout — the site's historical planning is part of the city's architectural context, not just a container for a modern zoo. The zoo stayed open through most of its 160-year history, closing only during the harshest winters of the Leningrad Blockade — when the staff worked in extreme conditions to keep as many animals alive as possible. That wartime story is part of the institution's identity in the city. Nearest metro: Gorkovskaya, directly next door.
