A play at the St Petersburg State Music Hall Theatre that takes the emotional machinery of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina — the closed marriage, the impossible affair, the small social punishments — and relocates it to a tropical setting. Not an adaptation: an experiment.

The transposition works better than it should. The Petersburg-Moscow social physics of Tolstoy's novel turn out to travel; the tropics change the temperature without changing the arithmetic.
