A self-guided visit to the interior programme of the Gatchina Palace — the imperial residence 45 km south of Petersburg. The palace was built in the 18th century as a country estate for Count Grigory Orlov, favourite of Catherine the Great, and passed to the imperial family in 1783; it remained an imperial residence until 1917. Successive generations of imperial owners commissioned distinguished architects and artists to update the state halls and private apartments. The self-guided route covers the surviving 18th- to early-20th-century interior programme — from Orlov's original state rooms to Alexander III's late-imperial private apartments.
