Modest Mussorgsky's opera Khovanshchina at the Mariinsky. Mussorgsky's late historical drama — completed by Rimsky-Korsakov after the composer's death — treats the Streltsy uprising of the 1680s and the schism in the Russian Orthodox Church. One of the great Russian historical operas. Sung in Russian with surtitles.

Khovanshchina is arguably Mussorgsky's greatest operatic achievement — a strange, monumental, patient piece that most opera houses cannot afford to programme. The Mariinsky is the natural setting.
