About
Bizet's early opera at the St Petersburg Chamber Music Theatre. Written when the composer was 24, five years before Carmen, The Pearl Fishers contains the great tenor-baritone duet 'Au fond du temple saint' — one of the most famous scenes in French opera. The Chamber Music Theatre production strips the exotic Ceylon setting back and lets the score do the work.

The chamber-scale format suits this opera, which is really a chamber piece dressed up as a grand one. A better introduction to Bizet beyond Carmen than most.
