Ivangorod Fortress and Museum
About
The Ivangorod Fortress is a major surviving example of Russian military architecture from the 15th to 17th centuries, built by order of Grand Prince Ivan III of Moscow in 1492 on the Narva River. The fortress covers around eight hectares and sits directly opposite the Estonian city of Narva and its castle — one of the most striking border-fortress pairings in Europe. The site retains its combat corridors, hidden traps and spiral staircases in the towers. The Small Powder Magazine houses a permanent exhibition on the fortress's history: a model of a Hanseatic cog ship, archaeological finds, and Petrine-era soldier's uniforms. Ivangorod is right on the Russian-Estonian border; check current border-zone entry requirements before travelling. About 150 km west of Petersburg.
