About
The Kingisepp Historical and Regional Museum sits in the centre of Kingisepp — a Leningrad Oblast town on the site of the medieval Novgorod fortress of Yam. In the 18th century the fortress was rebuilt as the earthwork bastion fortress of Yamburg; the earthwork bastions and curtain walls still stand, and the town park now occupies the former fortress yard. The museum opened on 5 November 1960 as a local history exhibit at the district cultural centre, and became a state museum in 1966. Collection covers the site's medieval and early-modern history, the 20th-century town, and the surrounding Ingrian cultural landscape. Kingisepp is about 140 km west of Petersburg, on the route to Narva (Estonian border) — a day-trip destination rather than a city stop.
