Love and Doves (Gurkin comedy)
About
A stage adaptation of Vladimir Gurkin's Love and Doves — a play widely known in Russia through the 1984 Vladimir Menshov film adaptation, whose lines have entered the everyday language. The story follows the Kuzyakin family, whose head Vasily is caught between his provincial doves-and-family life and a holiday-resort affair with the actress Raisa Zakharovna. The tone runs from comedy to melodrama in the classic Russian kitchen-realism register: forgiveness, love, family. Expect the familiar quotable lines — 'Ukh ty, yoshkin kot!' among them — delivered as running gags rather than nostalgic call-backs. At the Lensovet Palace of Culture. In Russian; the language load is high — the play is a text piece and the humour is verbal.
Bureau's take
A Russian language-and-culture-specific comedy that works best for audiences who know the film. Skip if you don't have the Russian to follow the verbal comedy.
