A musical adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's great satirical novel The Master and Margarita at LDM. Written in the 1930s and only published in full in the 1960s, the novel remains one of the great achievements of 20th-century Russian literature — a story in which the Devil arrives in Stalinist Moscow and finds a plausible city to work in. The LDM production reads it as a musical without shrinking its metaphysics.

Adapting Bulgakov is a specific kind of ambition. The LDM version is one of the more successful attempts to keep the novel's tone across the format shift. Best if you've read the book, or are willing to read a summary first.
