A stage version of Nikolai Gogol's 1842 novel Dead Souls at the St Petersburg Russian Drama Theatre. Chichikov, a shabby-genteel adventurer with a paper scheme, travels across provincial Russia buying up the legal ownership of dead serfs from bewildered landowners. One of the founding works of Russian prose.
