The Stationmaster's House Museum
About
The first museum in Russia dedicated to a literary character. The museum is built on Alexander Pushkin's 1830 short story 'The Stationmaster' — one of the Belkin Tales — and occupies the former post station at Vyra in the Gatchina district south of Petersburg. Vyra sat on the historical Belorussian post road connecting Petersburg with the southern and western provinces of the empire. The museum opened on 15 October 1972 in the surviving station building; the site is a Russian federal cultural-heritage monument. It was closed for restoration between 2018 and 2022 and reopened with a substantially updated exhibition — the restored interiors set the story in context of the actual postal service that Pushkin observed.
