The Priory Palace (Gatchina)

The Priory Palace at Gatchina — completed in 1799 to a design by Nikolai Lvov — is the only surviving example in Russia of late-18th-century rammed-earth (zemliebitnyy) construction, and one of the more architecturally distinctive buildings in the wider Gatchina park landscape. It resembles a medieval Catholic monastery — the visual reference is deliberate, tied to its function. The palace was built to serve Paul I in his capacity as Grand Master of the Order of Malta — a specifically Russian chapter of the order's history — and the museum's collection covers the Maltese Order and its Russian connections. About 45 km south of Petersburg, in the Gatchina park.
