The estate-museum of Nicholas Roerich (Nikolai Konstantinovich Roerich, 1874-1947) — Russian painter, archaeologist, orientalist, mystical philosopher and public figure — at Izvara in the Leningrad Oblast. The first state museum in Russia dedicated to Roerich; opened in 1984. The estate was owned by the Roerich family from 1872 to 1900 and was the place of the painter's childhood and youth. The site covers 60 hectares and includes nine estate buildings dating from the 18th to the early 20th century, plus the surrounding parkland. Exhibits cover Roerich's Petersburg period, his archaeological work in northern Russia, and his later Central Asian expeditions. About 90 km south-west of Petersburg. In Russian; the paintings and objects speak partly for themselves.
Bureau's take
The most serious Russian Roerich museum in the Leningrad Oblast — his family estate, restored. For visitors interested in the painter, the Silver Age or Roerich's later Central Asian and Himalayan work.
