About
The Suida estate belonged to Abram Petrovich Gannibal — Russia's first military engineer, godson of Peter I, and the great-grandfather of Alexander Pushkin. Pushkin's unfinished novel The Blackamoor of Peter the Great is about him. The estate's history begins with Peter I's grant of the land to Count Pyotr Apraksin, who built the country house and the Resurrection Church. Gannibal bought the property in 1759 and remade it — laying out avenues, canals and planted landscaping in the mid-18th-century picturesque style. The museum today occupies one of the surviving buildings; the surroundings include the church he commissioned. About 60 km south of Petersburg, near Gatchina. A specific and important site for readers of Pushkin.
