Noonday Cannon at the Priory Palace
About
Every Sunday at noon, a three-pound signal cannon — the famous 'unicorn' — is fired from the walls of the Priory Palace on the shore of Black Lake in Gatchina. Visitors take turns lighting the fuse and announcing the arrival of midday across the Leningrad region, in a tradition that stretches back to Emperor Paul I, when signal cannons in the palace courtyard set the daily rhythm of military exercises. A knight of the old order tells the story of how the cannons developed their own language, and why the dawn shot became the noon one.
