About
A stage version of Ivan Goncharov's first novel, An Ordinary Story (1847), at the St Petersburg State Music Hall Theatre. A young provincial idealist arrives in Petersburg and is gradually flattened into a competent bureaucrat by his sensible uncle — one of the great early realist studies of Russian ambition.
Bureau's take
Goncharov is best known for Oblomov, but An Ordinary Story is arguably a more focused book. The stage adaptation keeps the argument tight without turning it into a lecture.
