A guided tour of Gatchina Palace and its adjacent gardens. The palace was originally built as an amusement estate for Count Grigory Orlov, a favourite of Catherine the Great, and later became a full imperial residence under Emperor Paul I — who considered it his particular creation ('Pavlovo sozdanie'). The tour covers the 18th-century state halls and the objects significant to their imperial owners, then continues through the Palace Gardens — the Lower and Upper Palace Gardens — which are set with marble sculptures of figures from Greek mythology. Gatchina is about 45 km south of Petersburg. Combine with a walk through the wider Gatchina Palace park landscape, which is one of the more atmospheric imperial parks in the region.
