Tchaikovsky's opera at the Mikhailovsky Theatre. Adapted by the composer's brother Modest from Pushkin's short story, The Queen of Spades tells of Herman, a young officer obsessed with the secret of three winning cards said to be known only to a terrifying old countess. One of the darkest and most concentrated of the 19th-century Russian operatic repertoire.

The Mikhailovsky is Petersburg's second imperial opera house, a smaller and often more theatrically alive room than the Mariinsky. This score deserves the intimacy the Mikhailovsky offers.
