Grigory Gorin's 1989 play A Memorial Prayer (Pominal'naya molitva) at the Molodezhny Theatre on the Fontanka. Loosely based on Sholom Aleichem's Tevye stories, Gorin's play brings the shtetl world of pre-revolutionary Russia into the specifically late-Soviet register the material demands.

Gorin is one of the great Soviet-era playwrights. The Memorial Prayer is a specific meditation on the Jewish presence in Russian cultural history — grave and warm at once.
