Romeo and Juliet (Nacho Duato ballet)
About
Nacho Duato's ballet Romeo and Juliet at the Mikhailovsky Theatre. Duato — the Spanish choreographer who served as artistic director of the Mikhailovsky ballet in the 2010s — created his reading of Prokofiev's score during his Petersburg tenure, treating the music (which he considers the greatest ballet score of the 20th century) as the primary driver of the choreography. The plot follows Shakespeare's original: the feud between the Montagues and Capulets, the young lovers whose attachment cuts across it, and the tragedy that follows. Duato's specific reading uses more contemporary movement vocabulary than the standard Lavrovsky version at the Mariinsky. At the Mikhailovsky Theatre off Nevsky Prospekt.
Bureau's take
The contemporary-choreography Romeo and Juliet at the Mikhailovsky — a distinctly different reading from the Mariinsky's Lavrovsky version. Worth seeing both if you're on a ballet-focused trip.
