Ballet: Earthly Gods — exhibition admission
About
An exhibition at the Museum of Theatre and Musical Art on the major male dancers who transformed classical ballet in the first half of the 20th century. The starting frame: the period when choreographers Mikhail Fokine, Vaslav Nijinsky and George Balanchine remade the traditional narrative-and-spectacle model, and turned the male dancer into a fully dramatic figure rather than a support role for the ballerina. The exhibition features material on the leading Russian male dancers of the century — Vladimir Vasiliev, Yuri Grigorovich, Vakhtang Chabukiani and others — through costumes, photographs, choreographic notes and archival footage. One of the more serious dance-history exhibitions in Petersburg.
Bureau's take
A serious ballet-history exhibition focused on the male dancer canon. For visitors already interested in the ballet tradition.
