State Museum of Political History of Russia — admission
About
The State Museum of Political History of Russia (GMPIR) — founded in 1919 as the country's first history-of-revolution museum — occupies two adjacent Art Nouveau mansions in central Petersburg on Kuibyshev Street, near Gorkovskaya metro. The main building was the private residence of the ballerina Matilda Kshesinskaya (Feliks Ivan Kshesinsky's daughter, later prima ballerina of the Mariinsky and briefly the mistress of Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich, later Nicholas II). The second was the mansion of the industrialist Vasily Brandt. The permanent exhibition runs across two centuries of Russian political history — the succession of political regimes, wars, revolutions and reforms — presented through documents, artefacts and biographical material. Focus is on both major figures and ordinary citizens, cultural figures and victims of repression. The Kshesinskaya Mansion balcony was where Lenin gave his April 1917 speeches on his return to Petrograd — a specific site in the history the museum covers.
Bureau's take
One of the most historically loaded Petersburg museums — Kshesinskaya's mansion, Lenin's April balcony, and two centuries of Russian political history under one roof. Worth planning around.
