AFRIKA. Sergei Bugaev — retrospective exhibition
About
An exhibition marking the 60th anniversary of Sergei Bugaev (known professionally as Afrika), one of the more distinctive figures of the late-Soviet Russian art scene. Bugaev's career cuts across several disciplines: he was one of the leaders of the New Artists (Novye Khudozhniki) collective in the 1980s, played the lead role of 'Bananan' in Sergei Solovyov's epoch-defining film Assa (1987), and was the drummer of the band Kino under Viktor Tsoi. The show retraces his working practice across painting, installation, film and music. Held at the Museum of Art of Saint Petersburg of the 20th-21st Centuries. For non-Russian visitors: Bugaev is a central figure of the late-Soviet Leningrad underground — the kind of practitioner who worked in whatever medium was to hand.
