The play is based on Isadora Duncan's autobiography 'My Life'. Duncan (1877-1927), the American dancer whose improvisatory approach transformed 20th-century dance, is given a portrait as an independent and rebellious figure in relationships with the leading poets and artists of her time. The specific Petersburg-Duncan connection — her marriage to the poet Sergei Yesenin in 1922 — reads differently in the actual Stray Dog basement.
