The Duel (Chekhov)
About
A stage adaptation of Anton Chekhov's 1891 novella The Duel at the Stachka Loft Space. The story: Ivan Andreevich Laevsky, a petty official in a small town in the Caucasus, has left Petersburg with Nadezhda Fyodorovna — a married woman — hoping to build a new life in the warmer climate and looser society of the imperial frontier. Two years on the hopes have unravelled. The 'warm climate' has not delivered the moral escape Laevsky wanted; the provincial society is as suffocating as the Petersburg one; and a specific personal crisis brings the story to a duel — though Chekhov's use of the duel motif is characteristically unresolved. In Russian; language-heavy Chekhov.
Bureau's take
A serious Chekhov staging in a working loft space — an adaptation of one of his less-often-produced longer works. For readers of Chekhov.
