La Gioconda (Ponchielli opera)
About
Amilcare Ponchielli's opera La Gioconda, with libretto by Arrigo Boito, in a concert performance at the Mariinsky — sung in Italian with simultaneous Russian translation. Ponchielli's most successful opera; premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1876. The plot centres on the singer La Gioconda in 17th-century Venice, caught between multiple men and moral obligations. Contains the widely known 'Dance of the Hours' — famously used later by Disney in Fantasia — as a substantial ballet-within-opera sequence. One of the essential Italian late-19th-century operas.
Bureau's take
A serious concert performance of Ponchielli at the Mariinsky. For opera-focused visitors — La Gioconda is heard less often than the Verdi and Puccini core.
