About
A guided tour of the state halls of Gatchina Palace. Gatchina was built in the 18th century as a country residence for Count Grigory Orlov, favourite of Catherine the Great, and became an imperial residence under Paul I — a role it held until 1917. Distinguished architects and painters worked on the state halls and imperial private apartments over the following century. The tour covers the state halls of the central block, with commentary on the architects and imperial owners. After the guided section, visitors continue at their own pace through the palace's underground passageway — a specific Gatchina feature that other imperial residences don't have. Gatchina is about 45 km south of Petersburg.
