The Cathedral Mosque — guided tour
About
A guided tour of the Petersburg Cathedral Mosque (Sobornaya Mechet) — one of the largest mosques in Europe at the time of its 1913 completion and a distinctive monument of the city's architectural diversity. The building sits on the Petrogradskaya Side near Gorkovskaya metro; its blue-tiled dome and minarets are drawn from Timurid architectural sources (particularly the Gur-e-Amir in Samarkand). The tour covers the mosque's history, its architectural sources, and its role as an active place of worship for Petersburg's Muslim community. In Russian.
Bureau's take
The essential Petersburg mosque — one of the more distinctive 20th-century buildings in the city, and a reminder that Petersburg's cultural landscape includes serious Islamic architecture.
