About
Nikolai Gogol's 1842 comedy The Gamblers (Igroki) at the Molodezhny Theatre on the Fontanka. A cardsharp arrives at a provincial Russian inn planning to swindle whoever he meets, and finds — one long night — a group of professional swindlers who have been planning to swindle him. One of Gogol's sharpest comic engineering pieces.
Bureau's take
The Gamblers is one of the best-written comedies in the Russian repertoire — Gogol at his most tightly plotted. The Molodezhny plays it as the piece of watchmaking that it is.
