The Philistines (Meshchane) — Gorky at Vasilyevsky Theatre
About
The Vasilyevsky Island Theatre's staging of Maxim Gorky's 1902 play The Philistines (Meshchane) — the play that opened the Moscow Art Theatre's second season. This is the first Petersburg production of the play since Georgi Tovstonogov's 1966 landmark reading at the BDT. The play — the domestic tragedy of a merchant family whose provincial rigidity clashes with the beginning of political consciousness in the next generation — is one of the essential works of Russian pre-Revolutionary drama. In Russian; language-heavy.
Bureau's take
The first Petersburg Meshchane since Tovstonogov, at a serious drama company. For readers of Gorky.
