Rusalka (Dvořák opera)
About
Antonín Dvořák's opera Rusalka at the Mariinsky Theatre. The libretto by Jaroslav Kvapil combines Slavic and European fairy-tale traditions: the story of the water-nymph Rusalka who falls in love with a human prince, drawing on Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's Undine, Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid, and Gerhart Hauptmann's play The Sunken Bell. The opera's most famous single number — Rusalka's aria to the Moon ('Song to the Moon') — is one of the enduring operatic set-pieces. Score combines late-Romantic orchestration with Czech folk-musical inflections. Sung in Czech (or occasionally Russian translation, depending on the production). Check the specific performance.
