About
Eugène Ionesco's 1952 absurdist play The Chairs at the Molodezhny Theatre on the Fontanka. An elderly couple in a lighthouse invite an invisible audience of guests to hear the Old Man's message to humanity, which is finally delivered by a deaf-mute orator. One of the founding texts of the Theatre of the Absurd.
Bureau's take
Ionesco's The Chairs is a specific piece of European theatre history. The Molodezhny plays it as the absurdist argument it is.
