Yevgeny Schwartz's 1940 play The Shadow at the Akimov Comedy Theatre. Schwartz — one of the most inventive Soviet-era playwrights — used the Andersen fairytale of the shadow that grows independent of its owner as the machinery of a philosophical comedy about power and identity. Two acts.
Bureau's take
Schwartz's Shadow was in fact premiered at the Akimov Theatre in 1940; Nikolai Akimov's own production is a legendary piece of Soviet theatre history. Any current staging comes with that inheritance.
