William Tell (Concert Performance)
About
Rossini's William Tell in concert performance at the Mariinsky. Rossini's final opera, premiered in 1829, is a monumental grand opera that opened the door for Meyerbeer and the whole 19th-century French tradition. The overture alone is world famous; the full four-hour opera is a rare programming choice.
Bureau's take
William Tell in full is a genuine rarity — most houses can't or won't undertake the score. A Mariinsky concert version is worth the commitment for anyone serious about the 19th-century repertoire.
