About
A stage version of Nikolai Gogol's 1835 novella Viy at the Theatre on Sadovaya. A young theology student is condemned to spend three nights reading the psalter over the coffin of a witch he half remembers meeting on a country road. One of the essential works of the Russian Gothic tradition and the source of the celebrated 1967 Soviet horror film.
Bureau's take
Gogol's Viy is one of the strangest and best short works in the Russian literary canon. Any decent staging leans on its specific pagan-Christian tension; the play is more terrifying than a modern horror film.
