Alexei Arbuzov's 1978 drama Cruel Games (Zhestokie igry) at the Molodezhny Theatre on the Fontanka. A group of young Muscovites in the specifically late-Soviet 1970s work through the small daily arithmetic of contemporary intimate life — with unusual precision on the specific damage they do to each other. Two acts.
Bureau's take
Arbuzov's Cruel Games is one of the sharpest late-Soviet chamber dramas. A serious repertory reading.
