Where to start
Opera is a serious but not a closed genre. For a first visit, pick a familiar story: Eugene Onegin is built around Tatyana’s letter; La Traviata tells of a courtesan and a young man; Carmen is passion and jealousy in Seville. Two or three visits in and you start hearing the difference between Tchaikovsky and Verdi, between bel canto and the Russian tradition.
Where to sit. The Mariinsky’s upper tiers are designed for opera — the acoustics are excellent even from the gallery. For a first outing, choose the stalls or the mezzanine centre: you’ll see both the orchestra and the full staging. Side boxes give an intimate feel but the view is limited.
When to book. For the running repertoire — a week or two ahead. For premieres and international guests — two or three months out, through the theatre’s subscription or right as sales open. The full schedule of all three stages and concert performances is above.
