We Hadn't a Kopeck, Then Suddenly We Had Two
About
Alexander Ostrovsky's comedy 'We Hadn't a Kopeck, Then Suddenly We Had Two' (Ne bylo ni grosha, da vdrug altyn, 1872) at the St Petersburg Russian Drama Theatre. Ostrovsky's precise, funny anatomy of a Moscow household that finds itself unexpectedly rich and doesn't quite know what to do with the fact.
Bureau's take
Ostrovsky's title is a piece of Russian folk grammar in itself. The play is one of his most inventive; the Drama Theatre plays it as sharp comedy rather than folk pageant.
