The Cabal of Hypocrites / Molière
About
Mikhail Bulgakov's 1929 play about Molière — the great French playwright and the cabal of religious hypocrites who tried to destroy him — at the Molodezhny Theatre on the Fontanka. Bulgakov saw a version of his own experience in Molière's story; the play was banned in Stalin's USSR.
Bureau's take
Bulgakov's Molière play is a specific piece of literary history — the writer using his subject as a shield. A serious repertory reading.
