Central character: Prince Dmitry Nekhlyudov, a juror who recognises the accused as a woman he seduced and abandoned years earlier. The novel is Tolstoy's systematic examination of the Russian legal system, of guilt and of the possibility of moral change. In Russian; language-heavy Tolstoy.
